Adopt a Local Exxon or Mobil Gas Station
ExxonMobil, the world’s largest, most profitable private oil giant, is deliberately delaying the day we celebrate our country’s energy independence. The adoption process is easy, fun and important. The goal is to enlist station owners to help pressure ExxonMobil corporate headquarters, first by asking nicely and second by drawing public attention. The station owners have an interest to oblige. After all, it’s ExxonMobil headquarters that is giving their station a bad name. By getting the company’s gas station owners to join us, corporate headquarters will further see that we are serious about our demand for the creation of a vibrant renewable energy sector that supports new jobs, public health, national security, and a livable future for all. The adoption process will also lay the foundation for more ways to exxpose Exxon in your community.

1.  CHOOSE A STATION
The first step in the adoption process is to locate an Exxon or Mobil gas station near you. Click here to find a local station to adopt.
2. VISIT THE STATION AND DELIVER YOUR LETTERS
Pay a friendly visit to the station and, from one community member to another, ask the station manager or owner of the Exxon or Mobil gas station to send a letter to ExxonMobil’s corporate headquarters. There are two letters you can bring with you. One is from you to the station owner and one is for the station owner to send to ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson. The goal of your visit is to win over the station owner or manager and get them to contact ExxonMobil’s corporate headquarters (using the letter you provide or writing one of their own). Click here to download and print your two letters now.
Respectfully explain that you’re concerned about what ExxonMobil is doing to consumers, the planet and our future and that you've chosen to not buy ExxonMobil gas or products as part of the Exxpose Exxon campaign. Emphasize that his or her involvement will help encourage ExxonMobil to join its competitors in investing the future – a move that will help, not hurt, the local station.
Let the station owner or manager know that you will be stopping by again within a few weeks to find out whether he or she has sent the letter to ExxonMobil’s corporate headquarters. Be polite and make sure to thank the station owner or manager for his or her time.
Once you’ve dropped off your letters, please let us know which station you chose and how your visit went. Click here to keep us in the loop.
3. FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR STATION – VISIT 2
Stop by your adopted station after two or three weeks and ask the station manger or owner if he or she has sent the letter to ExxonMobil’s corporate offices. Bring a copy of the letters again just in case you need to restate your case. You may also like to download this fact sheet for more reference. The answer you receive from the station will determine the next necessary step. If the station agrees to contact ExxonMobil headquarters, then we will help you publicize this victory to the press. The station will be positively rewarded for joining with us! However, if the station manager refuses to contact ExxonMobil headquarters, you now have grounds to take further action to pressure the station to do the right thing (see suggestions below of how to do this.)
Once you’ve done your follow up visit with your station, please let us know the station manger or owner’s response. Click here to keep us in the loop about your visit.
If your two visits have not been enough to convince the station manager or owner to get with the program you may need to use various creative tactics to pressure the station into contacting ExxonMobil headquarters. You may chose a relatively low-profile tactic like leafleting to customers outside the station, or you may choose to organize a protest or a press conference in front of the station – or all three! It is always a good idea to call the newsrooms of your local media (TV, radio, newspapers) if you are planning a protest. These actions will pressure the station to tell ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson that they’re being targeted and losing business because of the actions of corporate headquarters. It will also provide you with a platform to inform and mobilize your community and local media about ExxonMobil’s dirty tricks. If you plan to hold a protest or other event, please let us know about your event and receive campaign materials. Please take pictures so we can highlight your great work on the Exxpose Exxon website and use it to inspire and encourage other activists. Click here to tell us about your event.
