Write a Letter to the Editor

Click here for the July 2007 Letter to the Editor Action!

The Letter to the Editor page is one of the most widely-read sections of any paper. If your letter is well written and timely, there's a good chance it will be printed and that your words could influence and educate hundreds or thousands of people, from your neighbors to your member of Congress to the CEO of ExxonMobil!

Tips:

1. Make it personal.

The more personal and original your letter is, the more likely it is to be printed. One way to do this is to write about how ExxonMobil's policies have touched you or someone you know.

2. Make it local.

The more relevant you can make this letter to the people in your community, the more effective it will be. For example, it's very effective to reference a recent article or LTE that appeared in your local paper in your letter.

3. Keep it short.

A good rule of thumb is to keep your letter under 200 words.

4. Include your phone number.

Many newspapers won't print your letter without first calling you and confirming that you wrote it, etc.

5. Submit your letter.

You should find a mailing address, email address, or fax number to submit your letter to on the Letters/LTE/Opinion page of either the printed edition or the online version of your paper.

6. Let us know if it gets printed!

We really want to know if your letter gets printed so please drop us a link atinfo@exxposeexxon.com to share your good news.

7. Send it to the CEO

Regardless of whether or not your letter gets printed, maximize its impact by sending a copy to CEO Lee Raymond at ExxonMobil corporate. If your letter does get printed, mail a clipping of it with a personal note about your feelings on energy policy to Mr. Raymond:

CEO Rex Tillerson Exxon Mobil Corporation 5959 Las Colinas Boulevard Irving, TX 75039-2298

Talking Points:

Please use your own words since you can say it better than we can. We've provided some talking points below just to get your creative juices flowing - the rest is up to you!

ExxonMobil is making more profits than any other corporation in history. Last year, the company made nearly $40 billion. This staggering amount is a reminder of who benefits from high gas prices - and why the company is fighting to maintain the America's dependence on oil.

Of all the major oil giants making record-breaking profits from high gas prices, ExxonMobil is the only one refusing to invest in clean, renewable energy to help the nation address its oil addiction and curb global warming.

If ExxonMobil invested just one week's worth of profits, it would more than double all federal spending designated for alternative fuels for 2006 ($351 mn).

Of all the major oil giants making record-breaking profits from high gas prices, ExxonMobil is the only one refusing to invest in clean, renewable energy to help the nation address its oil addiction and curb global warming.

ExxonMobil needs to pay its debts to society, including the $2.5 billion plus interest in punitive damages it owes to the thousands of commercial fishermen, Alaskan natives and others injured by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Since the court awarded damages were court-awarded in 1994, 6,000 plaintiffs have already died waiting for compensation. What kind of deterrent is set for future oil spills if oil companies can simply keep appealing and refuse to pay?

ExxonMobil executives say that U.S. energy independence is impossible, and that the U.S. "should stop trying to be energy independent." It's ironic that one of America's largest corporations shows so little faith in American ingenuity to secure our own energy future.

Instead of using its record-breaking profits to move America toward a cleaner energy future, ExxonMobil is spending millions of dollars to fund 'climate scientists' that confuse the facts about global warming and delay crucuial progress.

ExxonMobil’s track record in duping the public and manipulating policy makers is impressive and unsurpassed by any other oil company. According to a recent report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, ExxonMobil has spent a modest but effective $16 million funding a network of groups that deny the science of global warming and create the illusion of a debate around global warming where there really isn't one.

With gas prices so high and oil company profits soaring, ExxonMobil should be ashamed of its involvement in the crafting of the Bush administration's failed energy policies. ExxonMobil denounces renewable energy because the sector receives federal subsidies. Yet, it supports the more than $31.6 billion in taxpayer handouts, subsidies, and other incentives the Bush Administration is trying to give oil and gas companies through the 2005 Energy Bill over the next five years.

Politicians that do nothing to curb global warming, nothing to reduce the price of gas at the pump or our dependence on oil, and keep giving handouts to big oil need to be voted out of office. But the power brokers behind those politicians must be held accountable as well- starting with ExxonMobil.

I am one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have joined the www.ExxposeExxon.com campaign and pledge to not spend one cent of my hard earned dollars at an Exxon or Mobil gas station until ExxonMobil stops denying the urgency of global warming and starts investing in renewable energy to help our nation move beyond oil.
