We stand at a crossroads on energy policy in the United States. Gasoline prices are soaring across the country, and the economy is beginning to feel the weight of burgeoning energy costs. The world’s most respected scientists agree that we are already seeing the effects of global warming, caused by the burning of oil, coal, and gas to power our cars and homes. Our oil dependence also is compromising the country’s national security. And, as the oil industry looks for new sources of oil, our elected officials are becoming increasingly willing to consider drilling in places once thought sacrosanct—the coasts of California and Florida, national monuments, wilderness areas, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The good news is that we already have solutions to these problems. The technology exists to make cars and SUVs go much farther on a gallon of gasoline, conserving millions of barrels of oil each year. The United States has tremendous potential to generate electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Making the lights and appliances in our homes and businesses more efficient could save consumers money while using less electricity.
The bad news is that some powerful interests—such as ExxonMobil, the world’s largest oil company—are doing everything they can to keep oil and gas front and center of America’s energy policy. Despite earning record profits at a time of rising gasoline prices, ExxonMobil has failed to invest in clean energy solutions to ease America’s oil dependence. ExxonMobil has funded pseudo-scientists to produce “research” to hide the facts about global warming and worked to derail international negotiations to reduce global warming pollution. The company also continues to lobby to drill in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to help fuel the country’s oil addiction—just for a little while longer.
In short, ExxonMobil is padding its ever-growing bottom-line at the expense of the world’s environment and America’s national security and economy.
