Step It Up 2007
What a success! Exxpose Exxon was a major player in promoting and participating in Step It Up 2007, a web-organized series of global warming actions around the nation, all taking place on Saturday April 14, 2007. Around 450 Exxpose Exxon activists participated in the citizen-led events. In all, 1,400 events took place in iconic spots (including Exxon gas stations!) in 50 states to call on Congress for 80% carbon cuts by 2050!
Many people took the opportunity to educate their community about ExxonMobil's double-crossing of America on global warming. That's one for the American public, zero for Exxon and the fossil fuel pushers!

Be a part of the largest grassroots mobilization on global warming ever!
On Saturday, April 14th join Exxpose Exxon and Step It Up 2007 to call on Congress to cut carbon emissions 80% by 2050.
Choose an Exxon or Mobil gas station near you and get Congress to step it up and reject ExxonMobil's agenda to keep America addicted to oil.
The earth's temperature is rising, the ice caps are melting, and the climate is changing. We have the solutions to solve this problem...
Now is the time to make a difference! For too long, U.S. politicians beholden to Big Oil have refused to act to curb global warming. Today, the majority of Americans want action taken to solve the problem and new leaders in Congress are willing to listen. ExxonMobil, the world's largest, most profitable oil company, is working against the most fundamental solutions to global warming and double-crossing America for its own short-term gain. But the company, like Congress, has shown that it is susceptible to public pressure.
ExxonMobil protest in Pennsylvania
Our voices must remain loud, determined and united. We can support Congress to do the right thing and show ExxonMobil that we are serious about change.
Scientists say we must cut carbon pollution 80% by mid-century and hold global average temperature increases below 2°C (3.6°F) if we hope to avoid the worst effects of global warming.
This goal is achievable if we act immediately to begin reducing our emissions. We can do this using today’s technology to make cars go farther on a gallon of gas, improve energy efficiency, and increase our use of clean, renewable energy, such as wind and solar power.
By acting now we will not only lessen our dependence on oil but will also create jobs, boost the economy, increase national security, protect wildlife and our sensitive lands, and reduce air pollution and health care costs. It just makes sense.
Make sure that Congress hears your message to cut carbon pollution by 80% by 2050 and reject ExxonMobil's tactics to take America backwards on energy.

ACTION IDEAS & TOOLS
ExxonMobil protest in New York City
Register for an event near you at www.StepItUp2007.org* and you will receive weekly emails from Exxpose Exxon offering you different tools and materials, including a tele-conference media training, posters, and more to make your event a success. If you decide to join another Step It Up event in your area and the organizers have not yet decided what to do, try suggesting a rally at an Exxon or Mobil gas station.
Rallies and protests in front of Exxon and Mobil gas stations are very effective.
You generally get a lot of support from passing motorists, which is inspiring for your group. And with the right signs, your message can be immediately understood by passersby and the media. A gas station rally can be as short as one or two hours. Once you register, you will receive an email from Exxpose Exxon offering you support. Register for a gas station protest.
Out of Balance: ExxonMobil's Impact on Climate Change

Why are we asking for 80% carbon cuts by 2050?
Scientific evidence suggests that if atmospheric concentrations of heat-trapping gases stabilize at or below 450 parts per million (ppm CO2 equivalent), we have a good chance of holding global average temperature increases below 2°C (3.6°F) and preventing the most severe effects of global warming. Staying under the 450 ppm threshold requires cutting global emissions roughly in half from today's levels by mid-century. Given that the United States leads the world in both absolute and per capita emissions, we must achieve reductions on the order of 80 percent below current levels by mid century here at home.
This goal is achievable if we act immediately to begin reducing our emissions. By deploying available energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, we can curb our heat-trapping emissions while boosting the economy and enhancing our energy security. However, if we continue to delay, we will be forced to make steep, costly emission reductions in the years to come. (Union of Concerned Scientists, Recommendations to Avoid Dangerous Climate Change, 2007)
Why use an Exxon or Mobil gas station to call on Congress?
ExxonMobil, more than any other major oil company, is leading the country backwards on energy and global warming. As the world's largest, most profitable oil company (ExxonMobil made more profits than any other corporation in history the last two years in a row), ExxonMobil weilds undue influence over our government. (Read more on Exxon's government influence.) This poses a serious problem since ExxonMobil is also the only oil giant adamantly refusing to invest in renewable energy. While other major corporations like BP, Duke Energy, Caterpillar and GE are calling on the government to implement mandatory reductions of global warming pollution, ExxonMobil is opposed to this most fundamental solution.
ExxonMobil is double-crossing America by pretending to care about global warming while taking no meaningful action to address the problem. ExxonMobil opposes mandatory reductions of global warming pollution, refuses to invest in renewable energy and continues to bankroll scores of front groups and think tanks that deny the urgency and science of global warming.
Will ExxonMobil listen?
ExxonMobil cares about its image. The impact of public pressure exerted through protests, letter writing, Congressional activities and community education cannot be underestimated.
The Exxpose Exxon coalition has over half a million people boycotting the company and helping to raise awareness about ExxonMobil's efforts to block action on global warming. (Join us by sending a letter to CEO Rex Tillerson from our homepage now.)
Recent public outrage over the company's funding of junk science caused the company to say it would stop funding "five or six" groups (out of at least 43) that deny the urgency and science of global warming. With the majority of Americans supporting action on global warming, ExxonMobil has also been forced to admit that global warming is a threat and that action should be taken. (Read the press release.)
That's a start, but it's far from complete. By keeping the spotlight on ExxonMobil, we help embolden Congress to stand up to ExxonMobil and the fossil fuel industry and make the changes needed to lessen America's dependence on oil and curb global warming. The more people we inform about ExxonMobil's role in blocking action on global warming, the more incentive the company has to change.
If ExxonMobil's rhetoric on global warming is at all genuine, the company will:
  • Discontinue funding all groups that mislead the public on global warming and establish clear standards for groups that receive funding in the future. Read more.
  • Stop opposing mandatory reductions of global warming pollution and support policies that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions 80% by 2050. See example.
  • Invest in renewable energy technologies by matching or exceeding the percentage of profits other oil giants have invested in clean technologies such as biofuels and wind or solar power. Download comparison.
